Abbotsford Factory Keeps Sewing

A local man finds a way to get financing and buy the factory he worked in and saved 61 jobs. Story by Glen Moberg, Ashland Current.
A rural central Wisconsin man is being hailed as a hero for keeping the factory he worked at from shutting down, and putting 61 people out of work.

Dan Hannula walks the floor of the Abbotsford factory that's been his second home since 1976, "All of our product comes in on the north end of the building here and we have basically three production lines that run the length of the plant," he says.

Women sit behind row after row of humming sewing machines, and cut fabric as it rolls out of industrial quilters. They're making draperies, bed spreads, and pillow cases for hospitals and the biggest hotel chains in the world, like Days Inn, Super 8, Howard Johnson, Ramada, Wingates, and more.

Hannula says they do a lot of business -- 200 properties a month..

In Clark County Business Is Thriving

Clark County businesses are growing even in these tough times.  Article from the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune

Go ahead, you can call it a comeback. Sheila Nyberg sure is.

I interviewed the executive director of Clark County Economic Development Corporation twice in the past two weeks about business development in her county. She gushed about how well Clark County has rebounded from the Great Recession, a positive trend she said she began seeing clearly in her area last July.

She used words and phrases like "comeback," "booming," "furious pace" and "growth" in her conversations with me and in the CCEDC annual report released this month.

Wisconsin Outdoor Report as of September 17, 2009

Wisconsin continued to experience some unseasonably warm and mild conditions in the last week, with no additional rainfall. Most of the state has now gone without measurable rainfall so far this September. Current fire danger has risen to moderate statewide, and a number of wildfires have been reported in the last week. Fall color is picking up with the Department of Tourism Fall Color Report (exit DNR) now listing about half a dozen northern counties at between 25 and 50 percent peak colors. Fall officially arrives next week with the autumnal equinox on Tuesday.
